Comments: I read your op-ed piece in the Boston Globe of September 28, 1999, and you summed up very capably why the idea of a single high-stakes test is misguided, counter-productive, and even mean-spirited. MCAS is not responding to real-world needs, as is often asserted. The world is what we make of it, and MCAS, if ultimately implemented in its current form, will shape an entire generation in Massachusetts that will be uncreative and lacking any individualism. I have expressed my opposition to MCAS to my representatives in the state Legislature and hope others will do the same.

Comments: The "tougher standards" movement in Virginia is known as the Standards of Learning (SoL). I'm proud to say that I go beyond the "standards" by teaching my students "Standards of Living" in a democracy. While public school students are forced to learn a developmentally inappropriate curriculum and measured by a ridiculous standardized test, homeschoolers are permitted to measure their student's progress with a portfolio. Now, where's the standard? There must be educational consistency. Give the 90% of the students who attend Virginia's public schools the same right of authentic assessment as the 10% who are homeschooled.

Comments: I read all of your stuff I can get my hands on, Alfie. Choice in secondary school math classes (I am a HS math teacher) is not easy to manage, and even harder to start. I have "opened" my doors more and more to students regarding choice in the last 2-3 years, and things are getting better with each passing year. I also have been putting the "good stuff" first, and I just don't "get" to those parts of the curriculum that don't "turn on" my kids, or aren't deep or challenging. Thanks for all of your help...and keep writing! -Ted Brown

Comments: Thanks for this article! The explanation makes so much sense. I am the parent of a kindergartener, a 4th grader, and a 7th grader and the wife of a 3rd grade teacher. Our school system has been turned on its head by the Virginia Standards of Learning. Much of the homework that we see seems to confuse quantity with quality. It's not necessarily difficult, it just seems pointless. I'm definitely a novice in this area, but would like to try to influence things in some small way for my kids and my community. It's like rolling a rock uphill, though, to get a discussion going in the land of standards. I'm looking forward to reading more of Dr. Kohn's work. I'd also like to learn more about his speaking schedule. Again, thanks for this article!

Comments: I'll have an opportunity to put "Punished by Rewards" to the test. I've been appointed to a statewide merit-pay study committee. After hearing your lecture in January, 95, in Columbus and reading your book, I hope to be able to help dispell the state's presumption that merit systems will result in a "High Performance Workplace". Any new articles on this topic would be appreciated, but I'm spending my time going back over your book to prepare for the outrage that is sure to result from proffering the argument that rewards do punish. Thanks for your good work. mm

I wanted to know what you thought about the Waldorf Schools...they seem to do many of the things that you said were right...I have two kids in preschool there now, because I don't feel like gambling their education (lives) in the public school system as it stands. Comments: I just ordered "The Schools Our Children Deserve" on-line, I plan to pass it on to both my kids (ages 19 and 23)when I've read it. Both my children are bright and creative and got A's throughout high school and into college. My son especially, now a college sophomore, struggles to grasp & "retain" the content of courses & he feels he achieves short term memorization of information to achieve a good grades but ends up feeling cheated. The school gets his time & money (ours as well) & he's not sure what he's getting at all? Now we are considering--has he been & is he still dealng with a learning disorder or are schools missing the boat trying to teach all kids the same & focusing on test scores?? Do you find this a common concern?

Comments: I agree totally with your coments in the latest Educational Leadership article on the high stakes testing. As principal of what used to be a non-traditional, developmentally aoppropriate, information age elementary school, I have seen first hand our program being destroyed by Virginia's single measurement tool, the "SOL Test". I have written about it, talked to state politicians about it, and no one seems to think they can do anything about the current state of affairs. An our school board and superintendent, instead of standing up to the conservative, right wing politicians, just seem to "cow-tow" and accept whatever the state BoE demands, regardless of whether or not their decrees hurt our students. With the poverty rate and associated problems we and other inner city school district are faced with, in my judgment we'll never reach the same "high standards" of achievement that even the more affluent districts are struggling to achieve. Keep on shouting your message. Many of us out here see this so called reform effort as being the most distructive movement we've seen in our careers as professional educators.

Heard Alfie on Wisconsin Public Radio yesterday
Comments: I've read several of Alfie's books and, six years ago, attended a workshop of his called "Teaching Kids to Care." His ideas and passion impressed me then; I'm glad to see he's still railing against the educational establishment (but WHY is the "establishment" still in such a sorry state?) As a school board member of a small district, I feel victimized by the growing pressure to compete with neighboring districts by playing the "who's got the highest test scores" game. The local press always ranks each district by its scores as soon as the state results come out, with very little explanation (and, of course, no critical analysis) of what the scores mean, or how little they actually reveal about what students are learning. The kids have it worse, though. They're the ones who have to sit through several days of testing every year, instead of discussing, cooperating, playing, experimenting, creating, and enjoying themselves they way they can in a classroom led by a good teacher. Reading the art icles in this site has inspired me to keep the pressure on my legislators until we start seeing some positive changes.

Comments: As a high school physics teacher (up to the AP level) and drama instructor, I have become increasingly frustrated with the deadening effect that the standards movement has had on the climate of schooling. So many excellent teachers are terrified about the state tests that they shy away from teaching in a way that is affirming and empowering for students. The terrible, terrible tragedy of interpreting performance on state standardized tests as being an indicator of effective schooling is stifling education. The distinction between "horizontal" and "vertical" standards is crucial!

Comments: I've been waiting all year for "The Schools our Children..." I purchased it Sunday, and find myself saying, "finally, someone understands what I'm dealing with". I've been teaching for 8 years. All across the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Standards movement has taken hold of our educational system. I am no longer to teach my students to think critically, become informed citizens, challenge the political status quo, or participate in public policy debates. Rather, I've been told to teach to the Standards of Learning test. Alfie is right when he states (I'm paraphrasing)'Do we want kids to be good test takers, or do we want well educated kids?' I'm not finished with "Schools...", but I've come this conclusion. The Standards movement is a form of educational propaganda written and instituted by political conservatives to ensure that their reactionary ideology is accepted by the voting public as the norm. Don't get me wrong. I have high standards for my students, and even higher ones for myself. But my standards ensure the progression of the United States into a much more fair and just nation. I welcome any feedback anyone might have.

search engine, after having read Punished by Rewards....
Comments: I am amazed and afraid all at once at the prospect of beginning my 22nd year in teaching middle school Spanish WITHOUT ANY REWARDS OR PUNISHMENTS. Because I so strongly believe the tenets of Punished by Rewards, I am giving over control of my classroom/students to whatever will happen with the grace of God and with the wisdom I may possess to create a classroom of interest to these children. I feel the dread of having to deal with that first "infraction" (rule #3, consequence 3B, etc.) (^__^) but just maybe a new thought will kick in before I revert to the "old ways." Many thanks to Mr. Kohn for revealing these travesties going on in education today; only now am I able to completely get rid of the "token economy" that my classes relied on for the last few years. There's a new bandwagon, I hope.... Valerie

Comments: I attended a presentation Alfie Kohn did at Omaha, Nebraska a year ago. On our eight hour drive home from the presentation, the van was full of discussion about all the new ideas we heard from Mr. Kohn. Since that time, I have purchased several of his books, and taken a college class where we read "Beyond Discipline". Thanks to my college instructor, a number of us began meeting once a week to discuss these issues. I helped my instructor present on rewards and punishments at a conference and we attempted writing an article about the transitions we had been going through in reforming our beliefs about education. I have recently graduated from college and will be teaching kindergarten and developmental preschool in the fall. Now, I feel the real challenge will begin! I need to keep current on Alfie Kohn's information and continue to be fired up about it all! I am thankful for this home page and hope to find lots of support from others who are changing or keeping their beliefs to involve c hildren and move away from punishments and rewards and all the other 'stuff' we were taught and treated when we were growing up!

Much of Punished By Rewards rang true to me, but I'm not sure how I would have survived raising 3 boys without rewards and consequences. Now that my boys are at an age where reasoning works (12,10, and 5) and they can particpate more effectively in decisions, the need for extrinsic motivators is much less. Alfie's book has made me rethink my interactions with my kids. Our relationships are healthier because of it.

Comments: My doctoral thesis will address the issue of equity. I am particularly interested in the relationship between equity and standards. The idea that standards are top down rests uneasily in relation to teaching and learning. It is amazing to me that the standards seem to suggest that all children start from the same "ground zero". I heartily agree with Mr. Kohn's argument that there are two kinds of standards- horizontal and vertical. Having been a classroom teacher for many years, I believe the best (and most equitable) standards in existence are those developed by NCTM. Donna Sennett

Comments: I am a storyteller, speaker, trainer and an active participant in my kid's education. I have been an art docent, cirriculum developer, drama teacher, reading teacher, anything that encouraged kids to find passion. When my son was in elementary school, I tried to start a school that developed community & learning with one's whole body. But lenders saw only that I was not a credentialed teacher, only a mother and a former honor student. I couldn't possibly know when made school wonderful, fascinating and alive for children.

So, I have fought my small battles as guest visitor, enrichment teacher in children's classes.I came upon Alfie Kohn's work about three years ago, when I was helping a wonderful 6th grade teacher build a history curriculum around the new Washington State "Standards".

Mr. Kohn's words spoke directly to my feelings! I was a child who HATED competition. I would cringe at spelling bees at having to prove myself worthy by comparing myself to my friends, and my not-so-friendly-peers. I still remember the feeling of closing down inside. Thank you Mr. Kohn for being bold enough to speak out with the clarity of vision, and caring enough to buck the system!

A question: Several years ago, I saw a piece on behaviorists, and other perceptions. It spoke of a research scientist who had a cage of young monkeys that figured out how to open the latch to their cage, much to their delight. When the scientists "rewarded" the monkeys with a banana, they were totally confused. The feeling of success was intrinsically its own reward. Do you know who the scientist was and if he has written anything further?

Thanks!
Loni Gray

As a 3rd grade teacher I am distressed about the stress we put on the "product" and the "performance" of young children rather than on the process and the discovery in learning. The children who engage beautfully around text in class often do poorly on the ITBS. I don't believe this score necessarily reflects real learning, and I'm sick that more and more I am told-Get the scores up! I'm in a minority and it's good to hear your voice and the voice of others who question this "lock-step" trend in our schools.

Comments: Just finished the very insightful "What to look for in a classroom". I am wondering if Mr. Kohn has addressed the Columbine High School tragedy which is of course on all of our minds who are in public education in Colorado. Would it be an overstatement of his thinking to say that the alienation of the killers may be a product of the school culture that is marked by competition rather than by caring? I could imagine in a more democratically organized classroom the factions in the school would not be nearly as hostile.

Comments: I am delighted to find this site, though I have already read Alfie Kohn's books and researched his articles on the Web. It is increasingly difficult to make learning meaningful and engaging and to create a real community of learners in the face of more and more punitive approaches to "controlling" students along with the high-stakes tests and standards. It is so difficult to resist being sucked into the machine. I am grateful to find others who think as I do. It gets very lonely in a large, traditional high school.

Comments: I use your arguments on standards, rewards, etc. very much in my graduate education classes. Educators in this area are very ill-informed on these issues, and most are steeped in behavioral psych theories and techniques. Constructivism, multiple intelligences, learning styles theory, etc. were mostly unknown when I came here from Colorado in 1990. Many of the teachers in my classes view Kohn's ideas favorably, but some, along with many administrators, see his ideas as threatening. This region, more than any other that I have personally encountered, is obsessed with 'control' and the idea that students must be 'managed' - sort of like a herd of cattle. The fundamental rule is that "students should be seen and not heard".

Comments: I enjoyed your talk but it left me filled with questions, the most pressing of which is: how do we show children (not just our own, but all children) that we, as a society, value learning? Things like the discount card for students with good grades may be extrinsic motivation (times 2!) but it also says to students that the business community values student achievement. I have enjoyed thinking of non-competitive alternatives for my own children but I need help with suggestions for the school community at large.

Comments: Alfie,

I've always agreed with most of your views on education, and am most interested in your current remarks about educational top-down standards. They are further alienating our kids as most teachers are retreating to a more teacher centered position. Many hard won reforms are being lost, and student voices are less likely to be heard in times when they most need an adult ear.

Comments: Mr. Kohn,

I attended your session during the AERA Conference last week in Montreal and wanted you to know how much I appreciated your comments. You were definitely the highlight of the conference for me! I teach in a multiage, developmentally appropriate school where the students do have choice and a voice. We also had to fight those factions who would have liked for us to "just go away". They were so sure that our school would diminish their children's chances to stand out! We succeeded in winning this battle, but I know other schools have not been as fortunate. Thank you for the battle you are waging! It must seem like such an endless fight. I wanted you to know that you are appreciated and respected for your beliefs and efforts! Thank you!

Most sincerely,
Katie Routh

Comments: In light of the killing in Colorado I think that now, more then even before, we need to make the general public aware that more armed guards, dogs, police, and threats won't make schools safer of kids more responsible.

Kids need to feel part of a positive community. Using academic standards to make kids feel less than positive about themselves will only make the already awful problem of feeling alienated and seperate worse. (Check out; Voices from the Inside, Claremont Graduate School's document that addresses the needs of the school culture as identified by the kids and others inside.)

CATENet, the list serve of the California Association of Teachers of English listserve referred to a quote from Regie Routman's book, Literacy at the Crossroads. In the piece she mentions a progressive school district that underwent a reactionary swing of "Back to Basics" and did away such things as Conflict Resolution and morning discussion circles. The district discussed was Littleton, CO.

I am delighted to be a part of this newly orgainzing group. I think we have a lot of work to do.

- Jane

Comments Just read about this site in the 3/25/99 ASCD on-line bulletin. I've seen (heard) Mr. Kohn speak, have read a number of his books, and having had serious concerns for a long time about the implementation of standards (and the "motivation" behind it), I applaud Mr. Kohn's initiative. I am looking forward to keeping current through this webpage and having evidence to support what I have been saying and will continue to say (to anyone who will listen).

Comments The politics in education is frightening. The math community that wants to change instruction to match research has taken a heavy blow, particularly in California. They call it "fuzzy" math. Some of us call traditional math "parrot" math. The canyon is deep.

Comments I heard you speak in San Francisco at the ASCD Conference but was unable to get the address of the California contact for working against "tough standards." Could you please make that happen? I found your speach to be inspiring. I am especially interested in eliminating standardized testing below fourth grade. I think that might be doable in my district and our state.

Comments Isn't it strange that legislators and administratorskeep "raising the bar" on Standards, but no one seemsinterested in -- or concerned about -- helping studentslearn how to "jump over" that bar. And practically no one -- except for Alfie Kohn -- questions whetherthe bar is worth jumping over in the first place.--Jeff Golub

Comments I agree that this "Standardization" issue is key these days.It may be the number one issue right now. This is going to be used to try and take donw public education.I have been speading your "Tougher Standards" piece around.I hope we find a way to organize, as the organizations that should be fighting this have seem to given in already (e.g. the NEA, the CTA, the AFT...)
