Comments: I would like Alfie to comment on Iowa's efforts to reshape teacher compensation. The current plan seems to go against all of Kohn's beliefs: punishment by rewards and higher pay for higher test scores. I am wondering if Alfie has written any recent articles regarding teacher compensation and the manner in which state legislators are damaging teaching/learning by using "the ultimate carrot"--money. someone gave me a article by Alfie
Comments: I do agree that standard tests can be used against students ans schools in a manner which is unfair. However, some of your points in your articles do not sit well with me. I read many of the guest list replys and you sure are getting alot of people saying "good job". Are you a praise junkie now? Have you lost interest? Is your pleasure taken away from you? Are your readers manipulating you? Has your desire to write some more articles and books reduced now because of all this praise? I enjoy someone telling me I did a good job. In fact, usually I am motivated to do more. Somewheres along the line I may actually learn something or enjoy the thing I'm doing. There is a balance that can be reached and I feel each parent should decide for themselves what works for their child.

Comments: I just began reading "The Schools Our Children Deserve" in an attempt to better understand some difficulty my 8-year-old daughter is experiencing in school. Although I am still in the discovery process of finding out why my daughter is struggling, I feel like the lights have been turned on and the doors opened to so many obvious problems with how we are teching our children today. According to my child's 3rd grade teacher, the students are expected to complete 1 to 2 hours of homework per day, plus 30 minutes of reading, and writing a couple of reflective sentences about what they have read. That is what the kids who are "getting it" are/should be doing. Imagine the time spent for someone like my daughter who, apprently, is "not getting it." She starts after school, breaks for dinner and then continues until bedtime. Right now, my fear is not whether her grades will ever improve or if she will attend college. It's how she will ever become a life-long learner with natural curiosity and the desire to "find out." Right now, math equals oppressive work, and writing not much better. I'm angry. Where is the passion in teaching? I know there are some treasures out there but why the exception and not the rule? Furthermore, it was my daughter's score on the Stanford 9 test which was given one month into third grade which has identified her as just bordering on average, and in some cases below. Because of this, she will be required to attend "Winter Academy" as (and I'm quoting from the form letter that I received from my school district) "a condition of promotion." My child is already pushed to the limit with the work assigned and now this Winter Academy is thrown on top of it as some sort of intervention to help her. She does need help, that much is clear. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how I can turn this situation around and foster a true love of learning amidst such insanity.

The struggle continues, and we celebrate the struggle. Keep The Faith! I also wanted to pass along, as I will to HoughtonMifflin, that the "Reference" section of the book only goes through, Gallimore, Ronald. Comments: Mr Kohn, It has been so affirming to learn that so many of the beliefs that I have forged as an isolated teacher are being championed by someone out there like you. I am in a district and state that are "selling their souls" to the false idol of standardized testing and the mantra of "accountability". In VA the enrichment of students has taken the guise of memorizing the confederate battlefields and posting the 10 commandments in the classroom.....very distressing. Your work will help me load my quiver with philosophical arrows and continue to fight the good fight. Regards, D E Howarth Physics teacher McLean VA

It would have been nice to show you School on the River a integrated year long program for 7th & 8th graders. They spend their time outside of school doing research on the Mississippi River with local scientists. Or, The School of Technology & Arts 2 Charter School that allows children build community and teaches them to work and play together to learn. Or, School in the Coulee that takes an experiential approach to involve their students in understanding their world. Just wanted you to know that your message is being heard and there are places that are doing something about the state of our educational system.

In Kohn's brilliant books
Comments: I have just recently finished reading Punished by Rewards and think it is one of the most important books of our time. (I first read The Schools Our Children Deserve and Beyond Discipline is next.) As a substitute teacher who is working toward getting a degree so I can be a "real" teacher (tongue in cheek), I see things happening in the classroom that break my heart on a daily basis. Rewards do not produce self-determined, motivated students who love learning. The control mechanisms used in classrooms are debilitating. We are doing real damage to our kids and I am glad to see that so many people out there are embracing Kohn's message. I would be glad to communicate via e-mail with any educator who wants to talk. Some days I come home ready to explode with rage about what I see happening. Please, let's stick together and make this vision a reality for all our kids. Don't give up our idealism, this fantastic vision of community and caring...the kids are counting on us.

Comments: I am an elementary school principal. I was in the audience at Winona State on January 25. Our district paid for a meal and transportation for 30 teachers and administrators to hear the lecture that night. I was privilged to sit with my daughter, a freshman at Winona, which allowed her to hear an outstanding lecture on a timely topic. My message is thank you. I can't quit my job in protest over the standards testing in Wisconsin. But, I can work to soften the blows it inflicts on teacher and kids. I bought the latest book and will continue to look for inspiring thought and the call to arms from Mr. Kohn.

KAPPAN
Comments: Throughally enjoyed your "Fighting the tests..."(Kappan-Jan,01), your sense of dark satire is delicious. After reading the article I thought about what kind of teachers we need to implement "superficial learning". I would like to propose a sick remedy for a sick system. Innovative and creative teaching has little to do with the new accountability engagement. Do we really want our best and brightest to pursue a teaching career? Think about it. Won't such folk become quickly discouraged preaching "deep understanding" when shallow results are rewarded. So why educate teachers in universities. Why not seek out and train dull-normal, uninquisitive individuals who will be delighted to follow orders and compute test scores. Let's allow them a very basic and limited educational experience much like the Army trains its basic training recruits. Let us produce a cadre of "almost DELTA's" who will submissively serve, never question the wisdom of their masters, who are content to follow rather than lead, and who never ever question policy. Let's attract people whose curosity is limited, who rarely read books and who believe that children are only empty vessels whose minds must be filled. Moreover, they should be discouraged from challenging the status quo, worship prevailing social and political nonsense, and above all, be grateful for the opportunity.

I have given copies of his books to friends of mine who have become parents, my sister who is a school administrator, executives in the state child welfare system, and to people who are running for local school boards. His ideas really fit in with the ideas and values that Ralph Nader and the Green Party have promoted and I hope to meet with him at one of his Chicago appearances. Keep up the good fight!

ASCD "Education Update" Article
Comments: Thank you Mr. Kohn. Thank you for speaking out against the relentless assault on teachers and students guised in the "standards" movement. What standards, raising the bar, and vouchers etc... all about is segregation. This time along "class" lines. For a long time I have wondered if anyone else shared my viewpoint that students (especially the poor) will ultimately be harmed if the business community/legislators take over our public schools. Real education is not about merely raising test scores, it is about providing an enriched learning environment with a caring, attentive teacher. Providing students with a vast array of opportunities is the key to a broad based eduation. All this will be lost or shunted aside with focusing merely on test scores. If I may lend any assistance to your voice Mr. Kohn, in speaking out against the current anti-child legislative programs, please let me know. I will speak out, will write articles etc.. and help wherever I may to help turn aisde the tide of darkness. Sincerely, Geoffrey

Comments: I thought you would find this story interesting. I (like many Florida teachers) am in the process of helping my students develop the necessary skills to do well on the FCAT. We were working on a mock FCAT Writes and the prompt was: Think of a rule that you think is unfair. Wreite to explain why we should do away with or change the rule. Two of my students chose to write about the unfairness of having to take the FCAT and the implications. One student wanted to know if he got 1000 students to sign a petition to do away with the FCAT would it work. He also said that teacher should have to take it instead of the kids. We had a lively discussion on the fact that it isn't the teachers who are making the laws mandating the FCAT (which says something about teachers taking a more active role). The other student wrote that the FCAT was simply a test to show how "dumb we are". A sad state when a child make such a comment.

Comments: Thank you for your clear, readable, and important messages to everyone regarding the education (and miseducation) of our nation's children. I just finished reading THE SCHOOLS OUR CHILDREN DESERVE and feel encouraged to know that you are spreading this important information in such an accessible format. I've told everyone I know about the book and plan to give copies to each of our school board members and the administrators at my middle school site. I might not be planning to retire after just 35 years in the classroom if more people thought and communicated like Alfie Kohn. Thanks also for your previous books which continue to inform my interactions with fellow teachers, parents, and my students.

I feel it is because she has no choice in school. I feel by her not doing her work this is the only control she has in her life. I have mentioned this to the school but things are still the same.

In The Schools Our Children Deserve
Comments: I have read all of Mr. Kohn's books and many of his articles. I use his philosophy and ideas in my program "6-Steps to a Trouble-free Playground." I left public school teaching after 16 years because my philosophy on how children should be taught was so different than what was taking place. I currently travel to schools nationwide presenting my "Trouble-free Playground" program. I am amazed at how few schools, teachers, and administrators are aware of the detrimental effects of rewards, punishment, standardized testing, etc. There's a lot of work to be done to change education in this country, and it starts with common sense. Our system is caught up in the wrong beliefs. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that our current methods are damaging to students. Will all those schools, teachers, and administrators who wave banners saying "children first," please prove it with their methods and not with their mouths. Until we move away from rewards, punishments, consequences, conformity, standardized testing, bribes, manipulation, and the like, children will never be first. Thank you Mr. Kohn for your insightful writings. I hope that your work continues to inspire other teachers like it has me.

Comments: THANK GOD someone understands what education is! I have emailed every talk show host in hopes of getting some public exposure for the travisty taking place in our schools lately. No one seems to want to touch the subject or doesn't understand. Well I am on the front lines, and sick of the recent assessing that takes place almost daily. Poor little children eager to please and eager to learn are being shot down left and right. Now the little egos are suffering the blow of retention because they are not STANDARD! They aren't even given the time to process anything they are suppose to learn before more is handed them. Makes me sick and sad! I see their little faces everyday. Wide eyed, waiting for some acknowledgement that they are of some value. Well to me, each and every one has a special talent and it's my job to build on that and not punish them for what they were not wired to do and never will be wired or able to do. Unfortunately, there are few like me. I have been teaching for 17 years and we are back to where we were when I started. Fortunately I was around for the whole language, muli-intelligence, developmentally appropriate education later on down the line. I find it very difficult to abandon all that finally made sense, and worked, for this back to basics bull shit! Too bad I feel like the lone ranger and am mandated to test, test, test. I have lost so much teaching time due to this freak'in testing. Everybody looses! I sure hope you can make some impact, because this is scary!

I am hoping to put my research efforts into improving the classroom environment. Specifically, I am interested in discovering what in the environment promotes student thoughfulness and in helping students reach deeper levels of thought. I also have a dream of building a bridge between self-determination theor and goal theory.

I would like to plunk a copy of "The Schools our Children Deserve" on the desk of every school principal and every policy maker in the country! I am interested now in two things: 1) Either connecting with or creating a regional organization here in the Northwest to bring together those involved with progressive education and those who would like to help Mr. Kohn's ideas infiltrate and impact public education policy. 2) to locate academics and universities which are actively pursuing and supporting research and analysis on progressive education techniques, and which might be places where I'd consider doing graduate work. Any help from Mr. Kohn or other visitors to this site would be most welcome. Please contact me via e-mail. Thanks, and good luck to all who share an enlightened vision of education!

Comments: Mr. Kohn: I read your books while I was in a teacher training program at Metro State College in Denver. I thought I had a delayed vocation to be a teacher. I fairly RAN from the public school system after I did my student teaching. I had an excellent cooperating teacher who gave me the full dose, thank God. I ended up in an e-commerce company very thankful that I had a soft landing outside education. Your chapter on evaluation is particularly appropriate to work situations. I don't know how many times I have been 'evaluated' by a supervisor who attempted to characterize the session as counseling. Also for a time I worked at a very successful small business, a limousine company, whose manager/owner evaluated performance in exact conformity to your recommendation in PBR.That is, he didn't evaluate. He was smart enough to know he didn't know anything about what the job involved so he asked peers to help struggling employees eliminate mistakes when it was obvious toeveryone that a particular employee was not performing. No raise was involved, no paperwork. The employees helping out were acknowledged by the entire staff to be very skilled and they had helpful things to say to enhance tips, promote good driving, the whole nine yards. The manager/owner of that company avoided confrontations, unnecessary paperwork and the idiocy of some formal sitdown evaluation ritual for a .25hr raise. I hope this website will tell me where you are speaking this year and if you have any videos available.

Comments: I plan to learn more about your approach. I am very interested in homeschooling my daughter in middle school (which is 3 years from now) partly because I want her to discover the thrill of learning for herself -- not for a grade. Right now taking her out of the GT public school program that she's in is not practical -- nor desirable. At the present time she's still getting the basics down and having a very good social experience. Later we can build on the basics and really experience the joy of hands-on discovery learning focused on her interests. I have a group of friends who are thinking of doing the same thing. We are in a book group together and I plan to propose some of your work as reading material for our book group.

Schools will be rated based on whether or not they are "improving". This is just going to increase the already large emphasis placed on this test. The local high school has dumped the honors English students into large classes to free up teachers to tutor the high school students that haven't passed the test yet. THIS IS MADNESS!!! And Bush wants more tests tied to federal funding?

Comments: Your article "Rescuing Schools from 'Tougher Standards'" raised some intersting issues. While there is real concern about education in Canada and a potpourri of suggestions as to how it can be improved we have not been subjected to the demands of standardized testing found in the USA. While the latter are used in many jurisdictions, they are used either as diagnostic tools or in conjunction with other measures of achievement, eg, tests, assignments, exams, etc. Even provincial exams, administered in Grade XII, only account for a % of the final mark in most provinces. Your article will be a useful discussion-starter at one of our meetings of the Aministrators'Council. Peter Hobbs

Comments: I was very interested and excited to read about Kohn's work. I have long been mistrustful of the momentum toward the increased testing and standardization of our schools at all levels. My daughter attends a Montessori/Waldorf preschool and even they have to contend at some level with the statewide testing expectations here in MD. It is somewhat disheartening to contemplate, but Kohn's site appears to offer some concrete suggestions and references which could/will prove useful to those of us interested in this "fight." Thank you!

Comments: I earned an secondary education degree in 1998 and was to transition to a (second) career in teaching for the 1999-2000 school year. Something tragic happened that altered that course. In any event, during my student teaching in a Northern VA high school, I was appalled by the change from one semester to the next from teachers teaching "life skills" to teaching to a standardized test that went into partial effect the spring before. The test results were reported in Nov. of that year, and after the winter break, teachers began teaching kids in ways that would ensure their success on the upcoming test rather than continuing to employ meaningful lesson plans. It was a total turn off. I was taken by your efforts and ideas share in yesterday's Washington Post "Schools & Learning" section, and was interested to learn what if any efforts you, or like-minded individuals, might be taking regarding federal education reform initiatives.

Comments: CONGRATULATIONS! I am a private school teacher - having taught at Fay School (MA)and most recently at Norwood School (MD). Fay, I think, fit the description of a school you would think did things right. I was the Lower School Reading/Literature teacher there for three years and was free to use my creativity. It was a wonderful experience (I received an M.Ed. from Lesley College - which encouraged and rewarded the creative approach. My GPA was 3.93). Education systems in MD - both public and private - are bureaucratic and standardized. Perhaps it was my team at Norwood, but they bowed to a filing cabinet holding years' worth of worksheets - Zzzzz! I lost interest myself since the approach was so boring. I would like to help your effort - at the moment I am not working.

Comments: Hate to disagree with all of you, but.... I agree that children (in fact, all people) learn best and most easily when they're interested in the subject and when it's taught well. I agree that good teachers can motivate students. And I agree that standardized tests have substantial limitations in their abilities to adapt to different learning and test-taking styles and in their ability to measure logic and thinking process. However.... Two quick points. Number one: Some information just has to be memorized or learned by rote. States and capitals...the multiplication tables...the names of the elements...trig. formulas (sine, cosine, tangent, etc.), and so forth. Maybe it can be made a bit more interesting. (I learned my multiplication tables by listening to catchy nursery-rhyme-type tunes.) I learned Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species by remembering the sentence: Kings Play Chess On Friday Grinning Slyly. But, in the end, it's memorization. You're not going to learn it by osmosis. Second point: While standardized tests have their limitations, you've got to have some method of measuring learning and learning progress. Without testing and without standards, you have no effective way to gauge progress. (And if you do support testing, how do you make it consistent without some sort of standardization?)

Washington Post Article Jan 9, 2001
Comments: I got incredibly low scores on my SATs (780 combined first time and 820 combined on my second), but had a 3.3 when I graduated High School, went to college and graduated with a 3.2-- Point #1 Standardized tests mean nothing. In my first college english class, I remember the professor completely ripping apart the class for the way we wrote our first collegiate essays. On the board, he outlined exactly what we learned in High School English class on how to write an essay in college- we all agreed that that was the proper way- then he basically told us that everything we had learned was wrong. I learned that, for the most part, the teachers were "teaching to the test" all the way through grade school and all I really learned was how to take a test (of course in the case of Standardized Tests- I failed...). Point #2- Teaching to the tests doesn't teach anything. Now I work with kids from pre-k through high school and witness first hand the enormous amount of pointless stress that these kids go through with rote memorization, intense competition, and standardized learning. And the parents and kids have bought into the stress, based on how we need to get tough and more competitive with our kids on education- if something you're doing doesn't positively inforce this stress, and the benefits cannot be objectively measured, then they will rise up against it- which is now my struggle. I have seen and experienced the danger of our new "get tough on education" country, and am personally concerned about what our kids are learning. This idea and web-site is good. I'm wondering if there are any plans for or actual schools that use this method?

Comments: I completely agree, and I'm just a bystander listening to teacher friend's complaints about her disciplinary and curriculum problems in her first year of teaching. She doesn't especially question the standardized tests--she's teaching for the tests, aware that her program is being measured on the students' test scores. I'm baffled by the fact that her AP Government classes have no criteria for enrollment. Anyone can sign up, and about half can't do the work, she says, but apparently they'll be tested and their scores establishes the teacher's effectiveness. A no-win situation. Ridiculous. I currently have no children in the public school system.

As an assistant principal I have watched wonderfully creative teachers become slaves to workbooks and worksheets simply to raise standardized test scores on tests that do nothing more that determine whether or not a child can rememeber lists of facts. We should be teaching our children how to access information not memorize it. Thank you Mr. Kohn!

Comments: I developed a charter school in Louisiana targeting troubled teenagers with the goal of inspiring the love of learning in them through the application of arts techniques to the teaching process. The same year the school opened, the state passed a new high stakes standards-based initiative that requires standardized testing to advance in grades or to graduate. It has become almost impossible to implement alternative teaching methods when the curriculum is centered around what will appear on the LEAP or Graduation Exit test. In this state, if you propose a waiver from the required testing you are intrepreted as saying you "don't care if the children learn or not". It is impossible to convince test takers that their very tests can destroy the thrill of discovery and learning.

As a teacher, I find it abominable. As parent, I find it worthless. Well, OK, I find it stupid, worthless, invaluable, controlling and useless as both. Comments: I am a California teacher currently being driven by testing to consider the wider implications of what we are doing in terms of relegation/restriction to second language learners and those with fewer economic resources. Your book was very good to read. In my job, however it will be ignored by an administration responding to legislative mandate and with API breathing down their necks. Also in a school that loves to site it's lack of innovation in teachimg as maintainence of "Tradition". It's getting tougher to "Do the right thing" and clearly the tide with a Republican administration will turn toward further teacher boot kicking for accountability, more bowing to tests. It's a difficult time to think about what we are doing to children. I appreciate your books a great deal. sarah

Comments: Mr. Kohn, I'm an experienced teacher and I've wrestled with some of your ideas in 'Punished by Rewards' and your current endorsement in stirring up teachers via civil disobedience. Be careful in how you encourage civil disobedience without offering clear, concrete ways to implement change in our schools. If your name becomes connected with divisiveness among colleagues, I think your well-intentioned ideas will become overshadowed. While I agree rewards can be overdone and counterproductive, wouldn't you agree that encouraging civil disobedience can also be counterproductive in reforming education? Give me your vision for concrete change. It would also help if you were trying to implement these changes in your own classroom. Your credibility rating would increase if you were a full-time teacher trying to make a difference in front of real kids on a daily basis. Thanks for allowing me to respond.

Comments: GWB has to learn that our schools are doing such a poor job primarily because they are still essentially 19th century institutions. The "blame" if you will, should be placed at the governor level, not at the local level. It is folks like him who have continued to appoint status quo people to state boards of education and university trustee. Our system of education has never been thoroughly "re-thought" because it is so much easier for politicians to attack local officials and teachers, blaming poor schools on a willful negligence of local people. Mr. Bush and others are responsible for the seldom questioned and essentially incestuous system of teacher education and certification that has prevented any true reform of our schools. More testing and "accountability" will raise a few test scores marginally (or more in places like Texas where they were so low to start with) and little else of a positive nature. The challenge will always be with the "how" questions of school, not with the "what" or goals issue. The "how" questions are the hard questions that Mr. Bush's campaign ads should have referred to. He has taken the easy way by focusing on standards. His negative, "get tough" approach is just more of the same .....a focus on subject mattter not on the individual students. Schools need to be places where our children can continue to learn in the same ways that they learned before they entered school. They will learn positive values and develop good character, by following the examples of thoughtful, curious adults. The present system creates many of its own problems, including the need that to them requires of all things, classes in character education!

Comments: The work I am involved in, assessment for better learning (ABLe)focusses on teachers'formative assessement practices however this is not a term I am able to locate in American education sites. The focus tends to be upon assessment for either summative or evaluative purposes. The intent of this author however seems to be more in keeping with the philosophy of teaching and learning within which I am working. For example the "what to look for in a classroom" chart matches closely a task that we use entitled what would you expect to see in an ABLe classroom. I would include more regarding the focus of the teacher's interaction with students and the quality of feedback provided. Also include consideration of student knowledge and application of the purpose for the "learning"that they are involved in. Interesting to locate this site as it reassures me that the US may not be so totally test and grade driven as is sometimes apparent.

(we didn't have grade levels) So, by "standards" he was a failed student and we were a failed school. However, he came to us 2 years prior at pre primer level and afraid to read. Are we still a failed school? Is he a failed student? Only by "standards" did he think of himself as failed. He erased that from his head and is now reading well.

How does one begin to overcome the profound inertia that affects public education and begin to change these places? I guess the deep irony in all of this is that most everything that has been done is the opposite of what should be done.

Comments: I have read and own both Punished by Rewards and The Schools our Children Deserve. I am the mother of four children 3-9 years old and am very concerned with what has happened to them in public schools. They are very intelligent and used to be very curious, eager and anxious to learn. We still do a lot of cool "learning stuff" at home although they no longer perceive it as learning. School has taught them that learning is boring and hard. For them school is about competitive and "social"--though the kind of socialization they are exposed to sometimes make me cringe. I think many of the teachers mean well, but they just have it all wrong. I have taken The Schools our Children Deserve to my children's teachers and asked them to please, please read it and some of them have. Some even agree with the principle it espouses but have no hope that it could be implemented within our school system. What are we to do? Homeschool our children? But what about the rest of the kids--not just mine? How do we change this attitude of ur schools?

The psychiatrist is having us look into boarding schools because he feels that by removing Drew from the expectations that we as parents expect along with the schools expectations he may do better. Comments: COMMENTS: Thanks for your past reply. After reading Oprah transcripts and excerpts from "Punishment by Rewards..." I am becomming a slight Kohn convert. 2 out of the 4 group members, I work with, are becoming believers, 1 out of 4 can't quite make up her mind and 1 out of 4 may forever be a buddy of Glasser, Cantor, Kuhnin and others. PURPOSE/PROBLEM: The group that I am working with found some great info that has helped our presentation preparation for November 8, 2000 (we moved it up a week). We even have the transcripts from two of the visits you made to the Oprah Winfrey Show. Nevertheless, I am responsible for covering your Bio. It lists the many books you have written. (Continued Success as you continue your journey of learning.) However, there is only one sentence regarding the institutions of higher learning you attended and family. QUESTIONS: Do any of your books highlight the school system you grew up in? If so, which book? If not, where were you born? Birthdate? Parents? Hometown? What was the school system like there? How long did you teach? What grade(s) did you teach? When did you begin to realize, as a student/teacher, there had to be a better way? Answers to these questions are greatly appreciated. This appears to be the better way to reach you due to your busy itinerary. Our group truly appreciates your assistance.

Comments: As former teachers and parents of a highschool junior we have been adamantly opposed to standardized testing for years. Currently our H.S. Our family is also considering a suit against the district to challenge using a norm-referenced test as a graduation requirement. We need lots of help and support. I (Cindy) heard Alfie Kohn speak about six years ago at a conference on assessment in Oakland. It was a relief to hear someone make some sense! Can we get him here to educate the community?

Comments: Thank you for your wonderful work. I left my part time job as a Speech-Language Pathologist for a private practice three years ago to be a full-time mom to my two children. I was thinking I may not go back to doing a job where I felt I was coercing children to work on skills they weren't interested in so that they could be successful in classrooms where their real needs were not respected. Now I'm thinking I can be a force for change in that same job. Thanks for the inspiration. (P.S. I just removed my son from "the best public school - i.e. highest test scores - in Santa Cruz" because of the appallingly oppressive "behavior management" system the kindergarten teacher employs. In only seven weeks in this classroom, my son's joy of learning was squelched. He'll be going back to the little private school he went to last year where they must have studied your books! No grades, no tests, no token systems of any kind. Lots of love, and tons of enthusiastic learning!)

Read your books; attended Vancouver conference
Comments: Dear Mr. Kohn: I attended the "Hearts and Minds" conference and heard your impassioned case against the current use of standardized testing and its negative impact on human beings (both teachers and students). I was the one who asked what politicians and media persons are not responding to the vast amount of research that you have collected against the way that standardized testing is being used. I've come to the conclusion that the general public needs to informed, specifically, parents who can speak against the use of these tests. I am doing a presentation at the Charter Schools National Conference in December. My topic is "The HIdden Curriculum: How School Culture Affects Standardized Testing." Our school focuses on both the explicit curriculum of reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic as well as the implicit curriculum of values and assumptions that permeate the culture and manifest itself through the organizational structures of school such as governance and discipline; and through the way parents, teachers, and students relate with one another. We work hard to align the explicit vision/mission of a school and the implicit messages that get communicated. Although my topic is focusing on the broader context of school culture, I hope to get some of your message out through this presentation because there are certainly a lot of implicit messages being communicated through the emphasis on standardized tests that probably conflict with the explicit mission statements of schools. Very few schools have a mission statement that limits itself to doing well on standardized tests. Are you organizing schools and/or individuals to stem the tide of this kind of accountability/use of testing? I would like to help out if I might. Also, if you have a particular emphasis of your message that might be suited for my presentation, I welcome your input. Linda Inlay

The book "The Schools our Children Deserve"
Comments: Even before reading this book, I was a supporter of progressive education. I'm a graduate student from Bank Street College in NYC (a college for teachers that stresses progressive ed.) Now after reading the book, I am even more appalled at the whole idea of traditional education, rewards vs. true learning, testing, etc. This book has really made me look at everything in a whole other light. It is making me question everything I hear. When people say the schools are horrible near me, does that mean the schools are truly bad or does it mean their test scores are low? OR does it simply mean the schools are too progressive for the general public? When the presidential candidates say they're working for education, what do they really mean? Do they care if the children really understand the material? This book has made me angry. And this anger is a motivation to get more involved...to help make a change.

I haven't read any of his books, just things on his web site and I don't see any reference to the actual studies or statistics that back up his theories. We live in a competitive world whether we like it or not. I don't understand what is wrong with recognizing children who do well. How do we determine benchmarks over time with our children to see trends in education. How do we determine if they are learning the body of knowledge they need to survive in our world?

Both Social Studies departments will be meeting in December to discuss alternative assessment in the Social Studies. Presently, despite the intent to create a standardized Social Studies test by 2003, the state Department of Education is in a state of dissaray in terms of creating a Social Studies standardized test. Seemingly, a vacuum exists and our two Social Studies departments would like to propose to the state "our" plan. Do you have suggestions or ideas for us to go on. If there are other districts throughout the nation that are taking "guerrilla" action please let us know what steps they are taking to localize the decision making process and restore learning, as opposed to teaching to a test. We are certainly in favor of meaningful assessment and accountability, but the top-down, standardized approach is ludicrous. Thanks, Bill Patterson

Comments: I recently left the field of teaching. One reason was because of this new star testing. The whole system is becoming more frightening but people, yes even some teachers hop on board because they realize adjustments are in order and don't know what else to do. I truely believe your philosophies are right on, for lack of a better term. More people: teachers, administrtors, parents, basically everyone, needs to hear these philosophies. It is more than a shame, they are not more wide-spread. I agree with the gentleman below that people need to "hear the message". Even though I have left the educational arena, it is temporary. In the meantime, I need to find a way to support and strengthen myself and other individuals with this same philosophy. There is a lot at stake. How can one get more involved? Any suggestions?

Eisenhower became worried about the "military industrial complex" which, since no longer needed, developed needs of its own, and drove the US and its allies into the arms race with Russia. Nowadays, we seem to have a similar problem with the "testing industrial complex", which has also developed needs of its own, driving the schools and the national educational systems against each other into some new form of arms race. Your publications, Alfie, make this problem very transparent, and hopefully help to overcome it soon. We need to focus on learning and not on competing. Competition may be used like a medicine: small dosis can help in the teaching process, large dosis will kill.

I would like to join or start an organization to promote a more progressive educational system and fight the current trend towards standardized tests and "tougher standards." Any suggestions would be appreciated. The facts and views presented in your books on education are missing in public discourse on education in Colorado. I'd like to change that if its at all possible. I'd like to get together with other like minded parents and teachers in my area to discuss our concerns and talk about what we can do about challenging the current one sided debate taking place in our state.

Comments: Dear Mr. Kohn: Hi. I'm a huge fan of your work, at least what I've read so far. I really enjoyed *Punished By Rewards* and recommend it to everyone. I'm always really surprised when I meet parents who've never read it. It should be required reading for anyone planning a career in "education". Now... my question is this: where do you stand regarding homeschooling? In your new book, there's no mention of home education, though it basically reads like a 100% endorsement of homeschooling, particularly unschooling! I sat there and wondered if you'd read any John Taylor Gatto (like youself, a former teacher), because some of your ideas are quite similar to his. I don't think homeschooling is the answer for everyone, though it is for us. My problem with getting in my son's former school's face to make changes was that by the time they implemented the changes, after years and years of arguing and fighting and polling and blah blah blah, my kids and a bunch of other ones would be high school graduates and possibly ruined by the system. No, thanks. I angered the administrators at his school many times by publicly complaining about corporate advertising in their school and their bribery programs to get kids to read, among other things. ANGERED them. And this from the "good" elementary school! I pulled my son out and we've been happily homeschooling ever since. Thanks for continuing to write such thought-provoking stuff. LB-K

From being pushy
Comments: Dear Mr. Kohn: This is the follow-up letter you suggested. I found your book, "The schools our children deserve",extremely difficult to read continuously. That was because almost everything you state confirms my own thinking from over the years.I then immediately worry, why doesn't every educatior in the country promote this? What I find quite striking is that you apply these concepts through high school, not just to early childhood education where a similar view of the research has occured. I'm not sure, however, that enough of the historical perspective on why our schools are the way they are is in text and on record for the public. The best I have read on this topic lately is "The rise and fall of the American teenager," by Thomas Hine. Although it addresses why we segregate and fear teenagers, the history of American school formation is excellent. I believe the text also yields insight as to why we have extended such treatment down into the first grade. Not even all kindergartens remain a safe haven from the trend to address our adult world problems by institutionally coercing the development of our children. What I see as the most egregious result of this trend follows. This is a topic with related implications that I find myself almost alone in writing about. That is, the ergonomics of public school and even many private school environments are terrible. State of the art air quality, which could be had for the asking, is ignored. Lights that enhance visual function and similarly enhancing lighting design are more rare than schools adopting your suggestions. Stress reducing interior designs are non-existant, instead we have competative, overcrowded sites. Overal, what we thus have, at least in my territory and I think in most places, are situations that attempt to a. Force the mind into learning. b. Force an adaption to a health deficient and stress laden environment. c. Maintain a captive audience in environments that augment the sensitization (or out of dubious luck, desensitization) to allergens, pollution, infectious diseases, and chronic stress. Such adaption often has a negative effect, and I believe is one major reason, among others, for the relatively recent expodential expansion of myopia, asthma, hyperactivity under all of its new names, learning disorders, anxiety disorders and depression in the young. More theoretically, I believe that a certain fine, if not revolutionary type of mind found in children is tied to profound sensitivity. This sensitivity, in our environments, most often is automatically defined as hypersensitivity, usually considered to be panic, fear, or just plain abnormal behavior. For example, one child, whom I know well, sensed on the first day of 7th grade that his social studies teacher was "depressed" and didn't really want to teach (yes, a different teach for each of 6 subjects and study hall, with classes devided into basic, college prep, honors, and accelerated, and an old, crowded building undergoing new construction with a different smell in each class). His "honors" science teacher appeared to be of the opinion that anyone not keeping up with a volume loaded agenda should drop to a lower class and leave the teacher alone. On top of this, discipline and punishment for infraction is the norm--tardy slips for being late to class, for example, even though many kids are running to the next class. That's running as in literally jogging. As it turned out, the social studies teacher was expecting his wife to go into labor, was going to have to take leave, and probably was depressed. Dropping to college prep science instead of the more "acclerated" class alleviated much of this young man's immediate concern. However, his daily headaches, along with those of twenty to forty percent of the children in the building, continued. By the way, this is the public school system with the best reputation in the Cincinnati area. What we all face is overcrowding and health blindness, some of the results of which I have mentioned above. In addition, in 3 to 4 years, we will have the biggest teenage population to grace us in this century, and we have not prepared. Since the trend is to expand old buildings with inadequate building codes, I don't see the health of school structures improving any time soon. The stated rationalization on the part of some administrators I've talked with is essentially,"this is real life, deal with it," i.e. that which does not kill me makes be stronger. Meanwhile, just to re-iterate one example, 80 to 90% of PH.D graduates these days are near- sighted. This situation is preventable. In essense, what we have on the part of such schools in a behavioral technique, which has been called, "implosion," and assumes that the normal fears or ill-feelings arising in tense situations will dissapear when more of the same is delivered consistantly and with force. This is opposed to another behavioral technique, systematic desensitization, which assumes a relaxation response must first occur and be reinforced in the face of new stressors, allowing the subject to gradually adapt under less fearful conditions. Unfortunately, we are choosing to force adaptation at the highest stress level rather than the lowest. This, as backed up by more and more medical research, augments the spread of certain disease states. Thus my original question about home schooling. The fear is that home schoolers won't sufficiently "adapt," while the research to date shows that they are at least as adaptable and socially adept. The level of socialization might look similar, but the question is at what cost in the energy of adaptation. I have a series of published articles related to the above diatribe. If you would like, send be an email address that can accept attachments and I'll send some. I look forward to reading your newest book. I also notice that your itinerary does not include the midwest. I wonder why and hope this will change--Chicago maybe? Will continue to promote your work in our "school" system. Until later: Dr. Tom Thomas R. Firor MD/MBA

Comments: Dear Sir; I have recently read your article in "Education Week" and I appreciate many of your arguements. One of the realities of today that you did not address is the fact that the employment market, as well as "academic colleges" are continuing to use testing as a threshold for placement. I have seen, in industry, in the past few years increasing use of testing in the hiring process. As Industry has found that "educational certification" has a variable meaning testing has become a major issue. If this is the case where is it best to realize that additional efforts are required? In a school situation, or after leaving school? I think we would both agree that the educational environment is the answer. There aren't as far as I can determine, several entrances to a job site designated with different skill levels. Sincerely, Charles Hoff
